Beermeister, your brew was probably about 1.042 before you added yeast. You should have measured it then. That's the number the instructions are mentioning. That is referred to as the Original Gravity (OG).
As the yeast consumes the sugars, and gives off alcohol and CO2, the gravity will decrease. Final Gravity (FG) is usually about 1/4th off the OG. In your case, say 1.011. So, congratulations, you've made beer!
I'd still give it another week. The gravity won't decrease much more, but the yeast is still busy going back and consuming some intermediate components that can create slight off-tastes.
