Can I get some advise I have brewed my first brew a summer ale and after 5 days of fermenting it's SG is 1.010 the instructions say it should be 1.042-1.046 I sealed it back up with the airlock can it rise to that SG in one day?

Beermeister, your brew was probably about 1.042 before you added yeast. You should have measured it then. That's the number the instructions are mentioning. That is referred to as the Original Gravity (OG).

As the yeast consumes the sugars, and gives off alcohol and CO2, the gravity will decrease. Final Gravity (FG) is usually about 1/4th off the OG. In your case, say 1.011. So, congratulations, you've made beer!

I'd still give it another week. The gravity won't decrease much more, but the yeast is still busy going back and consuming some intermediate components that can create slight off-tastes.

Where in Florida?

Thanks, I see that I confused the SG OG and FG. I racked it for a second fermentation I will leave it for a week. I live in Dunedin FL. (Tampa Bay area)

Welcome to the board! I'm in Sarasota, so not too far away. Have fun with the new hobby, it'll soon become an obsession...

Dunedin Brewer's Guild meets third Thursday of every month. This months meeting is at the brewery. Come on in, you don't need to join or anything. Good times. www.dunedinbrewersguild.com
