I've never added anything to the fermenter. I'm brewing a hefe this afternoon and thought I'd add something for a little extra flavor.

maybe a slight orange flavor? Do I just throw some orange peels in there or is there something special I have to use?

Any other favorites to add into a hefe?

Moro (Blood) Oranges !!!! They are still in season and you still might be able to find some. I zest them, add the zest to the boil (15 mins)....steep the oranges in h2o @ 170 for about 10-20 mins and add that to the primary....currently have it on tap now.

Both Blue Moon and Hoegaarden Wheat use a little orange peel and coriander in the boil. I'm brewing an American Wheat tomorrow that will use 1 tsp of crushed coriander in the last 10 min of boil and 1/3 tsp of crushed sweet Valencia Orange Peel in a 5 gal batch. Seems if you are going to add spice to a wheat you need to keep the hop IBU's at or below 20 and no late additions of hops so that the spice comes through correctly.

thanks for the info. I'll add some zested orange peel to the last part of the boil.

Just err on the side of less instead of more with spices. You can drink a wheat beer with a hint of spice better than one that is overly spiced.

Ok. I really just want a hint of orange. Should I go with 1/4 tsp? Less?

The Blue Moon clone recipe I'm using calls for 1/3 teaspoon of DRIED orange peel zest. If you use fresh zest I would think you would need at least 1 teaspoon to be able to taste the hint of orange zest in a 5 gallon batch.

I used 1.5 - 2.0 oz of zest from 5 Moro's....and added the oranges to the primary....it's zesty! but that's what I was looking for.
