I'm in the middle of my sparge. Second all grain batch ever.

HLT water is around 170F. Temp on MLT reads about 145. Mashed at 154-156 (swmbo slayer - Biermuncher recipe) Should i try to maintain a higher temp on MLT during sparge?

many thanks.

If you are skipping mash out this is perfectly fine. Just get the sparge water to 170 and let it go. It's not going to raise they temp of the mash much if any.

If you were going to mash out to stop starch conversion you'd hit it w/210ish water to raise it to 170. Lots of people skip this step with great results.

You are good.

That is pretty much how it works out for me every time. Beer comes out good.

David :)

Actually, I think that should read.. if you are skipping a mash out your sparge can be up to 180-190F to get the bed up to a higher temp. Then again, I can't figure out if you're fly or batch sparging. If fly, you should use a mashout infusion to raise the temp or direct heat if that's an option.

well, i guess i was a little frantic...left a few things out.

-i inadvertantly performed a mash out (raised up to 172) while trying to keep the heat steady at about 55 mins in the mash when i fired the burner up on the mash tun.

- i have a three keggle setup each with burners

- fly sparge

well, my sparge was slow and stuck several times. after 1:45 hours the mash was finally done.

yesterday was a TEN HOUR BREWDAY. had a problem with my propane, and then the stuck sparge. i was starting to wonder if it was worth it.

when i took my gravity it came out at 1.054. estimated was 1.053. i guess it was worth it.
