I would not hesitate to send a beer back in a restaurant if I knew it was off but I got a Young's Oatmeal Stout for tonight and after pouring it I read the label. The part that got my attention was that it is supposed to have a creamy headlooking down nothing- no head not even a film of bubbles. Now correct me if I am wrong because I had just rinsed out the same glass that I had consumed a couple Old Speckled Hens (OSH) from (great head) so I assume that it wasn't the glass.

Speaking of OSH the real reason I ask this question is because I read this:

Anyone tried this? I first had it on tap at an "Irish" pub in Japan(!). It's brewed by Moreland in the UK. The stuff was excellent....among my favorites.

So after coming back to the states, I was thrilled to find it locally. I bought a couple sixers and was in heaven. A couple weeks later I picked up some more, and it tasted like crap! Very bitter smell and flavor. I recommended the stuff to my buddy (orrelse), and he picked some up about the time I got the bad stuff, and he said the same thing. He told me my favorite beer sucks. :D

The stuff comes in clear bottles, which I figured was the culprit (very nice bottles, BTW). Orrelse found some in a pint can, and said it tasted the same.
I can't figure out what the deal is, unless I just happened to get lucky and got some nice fresh stuff, and everything else since has been too old.

Anyone else tried it, and if so, what did you think? I'm hoping it's a freshness issue, and not my taste buds going on the fritz!

So after reading that I thought, "If that happened to me I would take at least one of the four cans back and tell them that I wanted a credit." Now don't get me wrong it's good, I like the flavor, it's just that I am not getting the full experience and for ~$4 I think I should get to experience the real deal. Am I wrong?

I wouldn't hesitate to take it back. Especially if the date on it is past its prime. I'd also make sure to tell the manager to make sure the beer distributors are rotating stock.

Damn, that quoted post was a blast from the past!!!!

I've taken beer back to the grocery store at least three times.

Rolling Rock - Exploded while going over the railroad tracks in West Des Moines. Talk about pissed. 2 Six packs all over the car. I was only about 3 minutes away and smelling like beer so the believed me. The receipt was less then 10 minutes old.

Sam Adams Summer Ale - Smelled like bad DMS. I told the store manager it smelled like boiled broccoli. He exchanged it for something else.

MGD - Smelled like Split Pea Soup, but w/o ham!! Got something else.

I recently got a gallon growler of a local microbrewery here in Rochester - Custom Brewcrafters - at a local grocery (Wegman's). It was cheap, so I figured I'd try their pale ale. Upon opening it when I arrived home it stunk the whole house up it was so skunked. Clear bottle, top shelf, and directly under the fluorescents.... shame.

The store took it back with refund after I told them the other's were probably skunked as well. All it took to convince them was opening the screw top. Initially, I really didn't think I was gonna get a refund.

I work at a liquor store that stocks a large assortment of craft beers and imports. If and when people bring in something that isn't up to their expectations, I give them credit, no questions asked. I'm sure most folks at stores will work with you.
