Was at a local Irish Pub in Honolulu, Murphy's. I tried a glass of Guinness and was not impressed. It looked beautiful with a nice light brown head. But it tasted watery and did not have the flavor of other stouts I've bought or brewed myself.

Are you saying this is the first time you've tried it?

If that's the case, and you've had and brewed other stouts, then I can see why. It's not the most challenging of brews to an experienced beer geek, but to a BMC drinker who knows light lagers only, then it's has a lot more of an intense flavor and appears to have more body then bud light.

It's a matter of perspective, to us it's something totally different. I drink it, if I'm in a bmc type place and that's the only non bud, bud light, miller, miller light, coors, coors light thing they have on tap. In that situation it's tasty.

Of all the Guinness products out now I enjoy the Guinness Export Stout in the yellow labeled bottles better.

I've had it before, but not since I've tried others. Youngs Double Chocolate Coffee stout is to die for. Obsidian Stout from Dutches (sp) both much better. Haven't tried the Export yet. I"ve seen it in bottles around here.

BTW, bout a 6 pack of the Gunness Black Lager. It's ok, but the more I drink dark ales the less I like any Lagers.

I can see what you mean about the BMC drinkers thinking it is full of flavor.

Funny thing was that the bar, "Murphy's" did not have Murphy's Stout. I asked and was told Murhpy will not ship kegs to Hawai`i any longer.

Guinness Extra Stout is pretty good. I believe it's based on the original recipe and isn't dumbed down to make it more palatable for the BMC crowd. But I do still like regular Guinness, just not as much as I used to.

The Foreign Stout is my favorite Guinness brew, at least since they discontinued the 250 edition. I've got a clone recipe that is next to the pot. We'll see how it works.

Guinness is indeed quite thin and light.

That being said, I still love it. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the nitrogen instead of CO2. Oh well...

Never been a big fan of Guinness, even drinking it in Ireland. However, Murphy's and Beamish are worth a pint when you can find them on tap.

Love the avatar, fatherjack. "Girls!" too...

Glad you know the good man!

After a while I'll put "A pair of women's feckin' knickers!" under me name.

I like that one a lot. But I remember when I thought regular Guinness draft was the strongest tasting beer in the world. This was when I was underage.

Had Murphy's on tap in a pub in Las Vegas. Thought it was pretty good. But that was years ago.

a freind of mine that is just discovering good beers was with his girlfriend at the liquor store the other day and he saw Schaflys oatmeal stout and i guess just carried on too her about how much they were gonna like it because his friend (me) brews it and its amazing well i guess they drank it but he was telling me yesterday. "It didnt have any taste compared to yours. I dont understand it. Yours is so good!
I replied "Oh yes young grasshoppa Homebrew is so much bettta"

Yea, Guinness is NOT heavy. it's actually a very light beer. ever seen the bilboards that says "Guiness only has 125 calories per serving" ?

That being said, I still enjoy a guinness now and then, but there are much better brews available out there.

Now Beamish is a good stout. Only problem is I have only ever seen it on tap and at one bar 180 miles north of here.

I love a pint of Guinness, but you're right, it's nothing compared to the big flavorful stouts we beer geeks are used to.

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the specs on Guinness. Its calorie content and ABV (two of the main things that count toward how "heavy" a beer is) is right between Bud and Bud Light. I have a beer geek chuckle to myself whenever bmc drinkers say, "Oh, I can't have more than one Guinness. It's SSOOOOOO heavy! Drinking a Guinness is like a whole meal in a glass!"
