Hello all. I am about to bottle some beer and will carb via corn sugar. Can I fill up a growler while bottling this way? Will it hold pressure. Thoughts?

It is not recommended to bottle condition in a growler. The glass of a growler is not as uniform nor as thick as a bottle. The screw caps will not hold carbonation, after being filled from a tap, for more than a few days either.

Any growler I've ever seen just has a cheezy screw on lid. Certainly not meant for pressure. If I fill a growler (from my kegs) it's flat within a couple days.

Before I got my kegging system I bottled in this type of growler. Worked fine for me. I still own a dozen of them. (They do not have a screw on lid and the glass it much thicker.) Also, if they get over carbonated the flip top tends to puke a little and let of pressure.

Also, in my experience they do not go flat when full. But once you start drinking one they do tend to go flat due to the head space.

It won't hold the pressure associated with carbing. It takes a lot more than 2.3 vols of pressure to force 2.3 vols of CO2 into solution.

And it's not the cap we're worried about, it's the glass. The glass growler can explode and, if it does, it will propel glass with enough force to penetrate drywall and send you or the kids, or SWMBO or the dog to the emergency room or worse.

I don't know about that. I would think that the cap will leak the pressure before the glass is compromised. Even with the fliptop one that the m1k3 posted, he said the pressure is release if its too great. Also i highly doubt it would explode unless it was infected or over primed.

And there's another problem - how do you know if it's overprimed? They're not rated for pressure at all. 2 vols could be overprimed.

But, this is one of those things that's like driving without a seat belt, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, or not always pointing a firearm in a safe direction. There's lots of anecdotal stories from folks who do it "all the time" with no problems, but when something goes wrong, it is catastrophic.

Yeah, after seeing those threads its prob not good idea to carb with a growler. I've never done it but i started off kegging since bottling looked annoying to deal with.

I found the growler that was posted by m1k3 on the NB site. At the end of the description it says to prime with 6 fizz caps. interdasting.....

Most of mine came from Sierra Nevada Brewery Online Gift Shop. They had free shipping on orders over $100. I'm pretty sure they never expected to have to ship 9 growlers for free! I am sure they lost money on that deal.

I scored several growlers with flip top lids. Since I've been making small batches, I generally will fill one growler with the remainder in 1/2 liter flip top bottles or clean reused 8 oz bottles. Using a bottle filler takes awhile. I don't use the normal rule-of-thumb of filling the bottle to the brim, but stop about half-way up the neck. I'm assuming that any over-priming would cause the flip top to leak before bursting the glass. I've only done this a few times, so my experience is limited. What I'm reading is that bottle conditioning in growlers is not recommended. Does this include flip tops (vs. screw tops)? The glass seems quite heavy, especially compared to screw top growlers I've seen.
