I was told that, in our latitudes, the problem with organic fertilizers is that the nitrogen isn't available soon enough, since we pretty much have frosts until they really start growing. In our case, manures with the most readily available nitrogen would be preferable. Further South this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

They need lots of nitrogen and potassium.
 
In the colonial days, in New England , farmers bought lobsters and used them for fertilizer. They didn't eat them. I don't know if they would be good for hops but they would certainly be expensive!
 
You know all that spent grain you generate?
Makes a fantastic compost!
Mix it with all those coffee grounds, waste veggie matter, maybe some leaves or grass clippings, add a little lime or wood ashes, and let her rip. Turn it over weekly and you'll have a great fertilizer in just about a month.
