just bought a hand crank grain mill (cast iron) from princess auto for $20 bucks, woohoo! works great, is fully adjustable and simple. I havent seen them that cheap anywhere.

Show us a pict. You have my attention on this one since the cheapest I've found is in the low 100's. Are the rollers smooth or textured? Do both rollers rotate or is one static?

Ill take a pic later and post, but basicaly its the two plates which are pressed or released to adjust from flower to crushed. when you crank the plates spin and the grain is fed into them with an auger type deal. Ive used the same one at my local brewshop.

Is it made for crushing grains? Why would an auto place sell them? Can you give us the make and model, and any other details.

Will any coffee grinder/mill work for crushing grains?

I can't find the page where you can purchase one. Can someone post a link to the order page. And I need to know if they ship to the US?

Sorry about embedding the incorrect link, I'm enjoying a Homebrew or three. Hey sheephrdr, once you give the grain mill a go let us know how it works for you. Thanks,

Jeffrey

It's a Corona type mill. I bought mine for $14 from Northern Tool last year (??) when they went on sale, but I haven't seen them that low again. $20 is a good deal for that type of mill if you aren't sold on a roller mill. You won't get as consistent of a crush with it as you would a roller mill, but it is effective.

My LHBS typically has them for ~$40 if I'm not mistaken.

If you're lazy like me, you can remove the thumbscrew that holds the handle on, and screw in a bolt with the end cut off. Then your electric drill will clamp on nicely.

What's LHBS?

Would it be better if you run the grain through a 2nd time?

What's the make and model? I don't see it on Northern Tool's site. I'd like to google for it.

thanks for the link - just ordered one:ban:
got a bag of malted barley in fergus ont. last month for $19.00 and was going to build a mill but this will work for now:mug:

I'm pretty sure they cleared them out at $14. All of those Corona mills are pretty much the same in terms of make (the Corona types), i.e., there's not much name brand comparing to be done.

Okay . . .I would like to order one of these. This link does not lead to a place where one can be purchased. Does anyone have a link to a site where I could purchase a mill like this for a price similar to this?

Princess auto sell all kinds of weird un auto related items. It's hard to get out of that store with your wallet attached. I bought some rollers form them last year to build my own grain crusher.

Would this be from Gilbertson & Page? If so did you just walk in and purchase it or did you contact somebody first? Also were you able to get just one bag for that price?

I just bought one for Northern Tool, for ~$25 shipped. They are listed as being "no longer available" online, but if you call, you can order them.

The part number is 168670. The price was $12.99, but it cost almost as much to ship!

Good work...that's about what I paid, too. I figure it's still cheaper even with shipping than most other options.
