I am planning on making dog treats from my spent grain, and although there is a lot written about recipes, I haven't found anything that talks about the safety of different malts. I will obviously not use chocolate malts or anything that touched hops, but are there any other types that I should be wary of? I use a lot of smoked and honey malts, and I want to make sure that if those go into the treats, nothing will happen.

Thanks!

You can use any grain. Chocolate malt has no chocolate in it so it is safe for dogs. I make treats about every two weeks and use whatever recipe I was doing at that time. Everything from wheat beers, stouts, saisons or Belgians. The dogs love them all.

I have used all kinds of grains. One tip is to lay out the grain on newspaper in the sun to dry it out. You want to avoid using grain bills with rice hulls. The rice hulls are hard on the dogs stomach.
