Nothing hurts like the gout.

So, I have the internet, so I look it up.

What is it? Uric acid build up in the body. Forms crystals in the joints of the foot. Extremely painful.

Causes: body is getting too much uric acid, and not getting rid of enough uric acid.

Bad for you:
Organ meats
Brewer's yeast

It's #2 on the list! (Damn!), and I haven't had any liver or kidneys in the past..., ever! I've never had kidneys, and liver was a one bite deal.

I had a big home brewer weekend planned: racking, bottling, brewing two batches, and now I'm not even going to be drinking. Feel sad for me.

At least I can lie here and read what you all are brewing. Have fun!

This feels more like Russian Imperial Extra India Stout Porter Double IIPA foot. My sister calls me Goutboy now

I get it every once in a while, the last time started the day after Masstoberfest. As bad as the gout is the cure can be worse. It sucked so bad this time I was out of work for three days. My right knee felt like I had 500 long shards of glass inside and every time I bent my leg those shards of glass cut everything around them. Then, when the colchicine starts to work you get diarrhea. Ever try to rush to the bathroom when you can't put any weight on your leg? Then, just to make it even better, I got nauseous and started throwing up. Both ends at once, unable to bend my right leg. I was praying that a bolt of lightning would come and end my suffering.

I haven't eaten a piece of meat all week and probably wont for another week.

And this from someone who considers vegitables akin to poison.

PTN

That was very descriptive. Thank for that. I'm going to the doc today, so I guess have some fun times to look forward to in the next couple of days. Ah, I hardly slept at all last night.

Don't forget one of the biggest sources of organ meat in most people's diet is sausage...in particular hot dogs. Been eating a lot of those, lately? I also understand that shellfish is a huge source.

Do more research and see what else you can cut from the diet before you give up on the brewer's yeast.

They have pills now...a prophylaxis. Doc told me I needed them, as even occasional gout attacks can permanently damage joints.

My doc will put me on that too. It's fine. Not going to stop brewing. Just wish I were brewing today. I haven IPA to brew and my first attempt at a trippel.
Ho hum...

I am no doctor but i play one on the internets. Looked up the gout was curious about it. Wiki says Vitamin C 1500mg daily and coffee help combat the Gout. Might want to give that a whirl too, see if it helps.

Sorry dude, that is the bane of homebrewers and beersnobs. There's a few threads on it on here including one below. It like my heart issues are what we definitley don't want to hear.

I wouldn't blame beer, perse. A friend's hubby gets gout flareups fairly regularly and the only thing he drinks is the occasional glass of wine/mead.

I believe that it has some hereditary component to it as well Drink more water - the more you pee the more you can flush all the gunk out of your system :)

I know you are only trying to help, but that is a very girly answer.

Drink as much beer as possible in the shortest time you can manage to teach your foot a lesson. Don't put the toilet seat down and never ask directions when you get lost. You will be fine. :)

Hyacinth Bucket claims gout is one of the ailments of the upper class...

LOL! :mug: Hey, whatever works. What can I say, I am of the female species so I suppose I can't help myself there.

But I do like the idea of drinking enough homebrew that you don't give a rats ass how your toe feels.

"F this gout stuff! I don't need you anyway! Where's my remote?!"

It was something my grandpa got once in a while. I know his foot swelled up pretty good and he couldn't walk on it. I never knew anything about it until recently. I only remember hearing them say he's got the gout again.

And I think it IS hereditary. I'm a hafta watch out!

Some studies have shown a gout reduction risk by drinking a few cups of coffee a day. As with most things, this may or may not hold true but maybe it's worth a shot (of coffee). :)

That's rough, man. Don't wish it on anyone. Hang in there. I like Ocean Spray Crancherry juice. Don't know if it does anything, but it is good.

I've never even heard of somebody having gout, definitely not a huge problem around these parts. Hope it goes away quick!

The two worst pains I've ever experienced were gout and kidney stones.

With gout, the bed sheet laying on your foot hurts like heck.

With kidney stones, you're sure you're going to die, and you're afraid that you won't!

No sheet on my foot, but the ceiling fan blowing on my toe was excruciating. Gout 1, Ean 0

for those that don't know I will try to describe the pain. put your toes in a machinists vice then tighten as tight as much as you can. then ask someone who doesn't like you to tighten three more turns and you might be approaching how painful gout gets. that said four to five oz of cherry juice a day helps prevent problems.
