Just wondering, is it worth spending money on some really good honey? At the local farmers market here, i can get about 18 pounds of some really good honey, but its gana cost about $100. just wondering if it worth it or just wait till they get cheaper honey. just so ya'll know, im plannin on lettin it age for about a year atleast and also divide it up after about 6 months or so with some blueberrys, peaches and what ever else sounds good at the time. thanx

waste of time and money. If your doing a mead with it then dont bother, plain honey from LHBS or just the grocery store is fine. raw honey is a completely different taste as well and honestly tastes very unrefined and not as sweet.

I would talk to the beekeeper and see if you can get a volume discount. Don't assume that just because he/she sells 1 lb for $5 that 20 lb will sell for $100. Of course, you won't get it in nice 1 lb bottles, but you're only after the honey, anyway. Nothing wrong with supporting local farming!

If you do buy honey from the store, make sure it's pure and not diluted with corn syrup...anything called bakers blend or honey syrup could be suspect. Check the ingredients if it isn't obvious that it is 100% pure honey.

Raw, unprocessed honey - regardless of wheter or not it is a varietal type, or wildflower makes for a SUPERIOR mead each and every time over the highly-processed honey you get in the supermarket or LHBS - no ifs ands or buts. I can get 60 pounds (5 gallon pails) of raw, unprocessed wildflower honey for 75 bux here in SE Michigan from a couple of local suppliers. Varietal honey costs more - I just bought a 60 pound paill of Mesquite honey from Miller's honey - http://www.millershoney.com - for $145.00 including shipping. Check out http://www.gotmead.com and do some research on honey.

we get all our honey straight from the beekeeper but I don't think I'd call it raw. The beeswax and what not is all filtered out and everything. This way we don't have to add any more heat except warm water to disolve the honey with the water.

and our prices range from $50/5gal for wildflower to 18/gal for varieties.

and 5 gallons weighs what...about...60 pounds? 18# for a hundred bucks is WAY out of line. Even at my suppliers (Vitamin Cottage carries a couple Colorado grown varieties) or the LHBS, I don't pay more than about $35 for a gallon (12 Pounds)

My local payless (owned by Kroger's if you don't know the name) sells the local honey for about $14 per 3 lbs, which is expensive, but that isn't too bad for good honey (wild flower, blueberry etc plenty of options for just a grocery stores.)

Check his numbers again. $50/5gal is less than a dollar a pound and $18/gal is about $1.50/#. Thats dirt cheap for what I have seen. $2-$3/# seems to be more normal for local honey.

That's what I'm saying. $50 for 5 gallons is awsome. But the point I was making is that 18 pounds for a hundred bucks is about $5.50 a pound, and that seems really high to me.

yeah it is dirt cheap, but that's the price...We're expecting it to be higher next time around by how much.. not sure. Right now they're out until next harvest/whatever they call it when they collect honey.

I just get it at my lhbs....its a fat frog hair over 2 bucks a pound but its cheaper than the store and its raw local honey. Its tasty...I can get it cheaper from the beekeeper $60 for 5gal or a buck a pound, But its a long drive to get to the keeper and I beleive in supporting my lhbs as he has to make a profit too. Not all of them carry honey as the true bread and butter seems to be beer brewing supplies. I am grateful that he has so much wine stuff there as well.

Harvest is the correct term. :)
