Good Place to purchase Malt Extract

I was wondering if you guys had a good place online or anywhere in NY to buy malt extract (liquid, dry, unhopped, hopped, light, amber, dark, all of the above). I find it is the most expensive ingredient in my extract brew by FAR! When I get a kit that supplies the extract, it's about $30. But when I do my own recipe, it costs more than $30 just for the extract! I enjoy modifying and doing my own recipe, but it is getting costly - up to $65 for a 5 gallon total recipe (about 50 beers).

I know that still is not much for beer, but does anybody use a site or know of a place that has quality extract for cheap?

don't know where sound beach is my dude, but i live in new york and i get all my stuff from northern brewer online. 6lb liquid malt extract will cost about $15- i've found that i pay about the same for ingredients in a kit that i do if i buy all my own ingredients. the only difference is that you can call a beer your own when you buy your own ingredients and make it yours. Northern Brewer charged 7 flat for shipping. just make sure you order like today/tomorrow if you hope to brew on time on sat/sunday.

i'll be subscribing to this post for any other suggestions but this is what i do.

Austin Homebrew has a decent selection of extracts with flat rate shipping so you can order in bulk and not have to worry about shipping costs.
Morebeer has free shipping over $65 or so, but their selection isn't too great...
As for the other companies, ordering in bulk is really the only way to get it cheaper. The reason the kits are adequately priced is because companies buy the extract in bulk, therefore they have the means to privide it at a lower price.
Case and point: buying in bulk and storing it somewhere until you need it is really the only way to avoid high prices, but it seems like you are already buying it 5gal at a time...
If anyone else knows of a better way, I'd be interested in knowing as well!

Dry extract costs about $4 per pound

People here tend to like Northern Brewer, Austin Homebrew, midwwest supplies, or MoreBeer, for online orders.

I am in NY also, and I go to Arbor Wine in Islip, to buy liquid yeast or other time/heat sensitive items... or last minute odds and ends... But the vast majority of purchases of mine are online at one of the places I mentioned.

Added: Also, MoreBeer.com has free shipping, even on some heavy items (like carboys and sacks of grain).. however, expect to wait over 1 week for delivery, as they are in California and are never in much of a hurry to ship for free (other options are available).

I'm sorry. I need to clear that up. I mean the RECIPE for a 5gal homebrew can total $60-$65 just because the extract I am purchasing averages $5/lb. Sorry about that!

I like to use 6+lbs. in a brew, and that costs over $30 for me in extract. From what I see here, there are better prices. Thanks so much guys! Cheers!

i keep it on top of my boil kettle while i'm trying to get the water to boil. The steam heats up the metal cover on my kettle, which helps soften the liquid on the plastic. turn it every once in awhile to distribute the heat, and then squeeze it from top to bottom.

i also always tend to brew and barbecue since i brew several batches on brew day if i can. throwing the plastic on the grill cover does wonders as long as you keep an eye on it.

Arbor wine is a little expensive in my opinion.. it's just where I go in a pinch.. and for yeast. I will take a look at the place in Northport sometime.. thanks!

To heat the plastic jug of extract, simply drop it in a pot of warm water Perhaps the water you are heating to brew with even...

Sounds like you've been paying too much for your extract. If you want to make your own recipes or follow others recipes without using a kit You really shouldn't be buying hopped extract. Someone mentioned morebeer above. With no tax and free shipping for orders or 59 or more their prices are pretty darn good. They have 5 dry extracts and 2 liquid extracts. You pretty much just need light extract which represents your base 2 row then you can use grains to make whatever style you want.

i just ordered from dmemart.com - you have to order 12lbs of dry extract minimum but the price comes in at $45 with free shipping which is pretty low compared to most other places unless you buy 50lb bags
