Guys I just got a 15 gal fermentor from the LHBS it used to be a LME container, but I want to do a full Sanke's worth of ESB and have it ready for senior week at my college (mid May). I really enjoy the 2009 Sierra Nevada ESB and would like to have a recipe close to that or anything really. The only other ESB I drink regularly is Lakefront Brewery's orgain ESB as II am in Milwaukee, but that lacks on the hops. Also If necessary I could do all grain (it would be my first) but I have another brew buddy :tank: here and we could split the load and do it from extract. I am open to suggestions. Thanks guys.

The Sierra Nevada is not completely a english bitter.

Taken from their site:

"Our ESB combines the best of English tradition with West Coast style. A blend of malts featuring British-grown Maris Otter is balanced with the earthy spiciness of hand-selected English and US hops. The ale is left unfiltered, which enhances mouthfeel and hop aroma creating a slightly reddish-copper hue."

So if you like that, I am not sure about a clone but for a good ESB, Redhook has a good example of a traditional ESB and from what I read here :https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f64/captain-hooked-bitters-red-hook-clone-award-winner-29740/ BM has a pretty good clone of it.

When I think of ESB, I think of England, not the NW.

With that in mind, here's the ESB I made last weekend:

9.0lb Maris Otter
1.0lb Crystal 60L
0.5lb Maltodextrine

1oz Nugget (60 min)
1oz EK Goldings (5min)

Mash @ 152, boil for 60 and pitched w/ Safale S-04
OG 1.056
FG ~1.015

I love me a good ESB; anyone have one using Fuggles? I happen to have a little laying around I thought would work with an ESB.

It's fermenting right now, but I have good feelings about it:

5.25 gallon batch
Single infusion mash at 153 for 60 min
7lb 2 row
1 lb wheat
0.5 lb crystal 60
0.1 lb roasted barley
1oz fuggles @FWH, 20 and 0
S-05 (would recommend S-04)

Here's my favorite Special Bitter/ESB recipe: Carolina Gales. It was adapted from Gales Best in "Brew Your Own British Real Ale." There are yeast substitutions at the bottom of the recipe. Though if you are going for more of a Sierra Nevada flavor you'll want to substitute some American hops in there for the flavor and aroma additions. That's one of the primary characteristics of their ESB.

I brewed an extract ESB a while back that turned out smooth and delicious. Here's the recipe if your interested:

3.15 lbs. gold LME (60 min)
3.15 lbs. gold LME (15 min)
1 lb. Simpsons medium crystal
2 oz. Willamette (60 min)
1 oz. EKG (15 min)
1 oz. EKG (5 min)
1 oz. EKG (dry hop)
Safale S-04

This is a Northern Brewer kit (I'm a hophead so I added the dry hops myself) and it turned out fantastic.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think of England too when I hear ESB, but I was drinking some of SN ESB and thought that it tasted good despite being a mix between an apa and ESB. I will ramp up one of these to 15 gal and let you guys know how it turns out.
