Waiting for my 16GB flash drive to come in snail mail so I can download windows 7 onto it. Then make sure I've got everything I need saved to the new external hard drive. One other thing though. Ever since I "unchecked" the box that saves websites, etc to load'em faster & removing adware last thing at night & first thing in the morning the comp's a bit faster. Those two things make a lot of difference.

Well, here we go again. Dammit. I download the latest paint.net program, try to unzip it & install, & get some pnd error about some shem.exe or other. Can't install it no matter how many times I try. I need it back to do my book covers...

Depending where you downloaded it from, it may have come with some nasty payloads. I can hear the screaming on the Net from where I sit.

You really need to start educating yourself about safe browsing and installing software that's "free." Most things are not really free and, even worse, want to install extra stuff. Always do a CUSTOM installation, and when asked, you need to decline all those.

If something pops up out of nowhere telling you that your computer is infected, do NOT click any buttons. Pull the plug literally and restart that machine.

Read twice, then check twice before clicking any button you don't expect. When in doubt, restart your machine by unplugging it. Don't even exit.

Again, abandon all hope w/ Microcrap & go Apple.
And no, I'm not an Apple employee or marketer. I started w/ DOS 1.0 in 1983. Finally saw the light about 7 years ago & have never looked back- gladly!

Please, don't start that here.

I've worked with both, and both Apple and the PC have earned their place. But can you send us a link where one can buy an Apple desktop or laptop for under $400? Plenty of PCs around for that price, including a screen.

Ok, this was a little weird. I went to paint.net forum & followed a suggestion to go into the system ( i forget what it's called) & this one windows function towards the bottom of the list had stopped ( the ones with the little gear to the left of each one). I got it started in manual again as instructed. Then I see this window pop in to install microsoft 4.5.2 that is needed to install/run the program. Then the paint.net 4.0.4 window pops in & back out. Clicked on the downloaded file again & ir finally installed. bogged down on final instal, but finished. I'm still waiting for snail mail to deliver my 16GB flash drive. I needed paint.net reinstalled to do my book covers with. Microsoft paint just won't work in the ways I need it to. At least now I got one more piece of the puzzle back in place. I can't wait to finish fixing this thing. I've also decided to load the whole darn system into the external drive, just in case I missed something deep in memory...:drunk: Damn, I need a beer...or two...or...

You get what you pay for!!

While true, unionrdr is trying to do it on a budget.

Anyhow, one, few or all of his PCs could be converted to Linux Machine for $0.00 and probably better off than what he has now. This Linux OS "Zorin 9" is good for beginners and has WINE for running his Windows Programs.

Here's your MAC OS Look...

I'm going to have to look through the mail. Maybe we missed it? Hope I didn't get ripped-off again? &&> An interesting development. I checked the tracking number & it was sent yesterday to Lorain, OH 44052 when I clearly & correctly stated my address as Sheffield Village, OH 44054! I guess someone in the system is at their old rip it off & fence it crap again.

That may have to do with routing rather than wrong address.

I think their warehouse is in Edison, NJ. I've gotten things within 3 days without expedited shipping, which I think is a hoax anyway.

What kind of deal did you get to buy it online? In general I buy local Wal-Mart or Best Buy. Unless the savings is worth the shipping cost.

Finally decided to look at the links you provided. System is definitely intriguing! Giving it a look now!

I don't know whether to shiz or go blind. I can't get this dang thing to either recognize external USB flash drive or external hard drive. I need to backup the system to hard drive, then zorin os 9 to flash drive. I've been messing with this dang windows 7 system trying to do any of it. Spyhunter 4 took some 3 friggin' hours to run a quick scan. Dammit, I need help with this thing I can't afford. I got everything I need, I just can't DO anything!?...

C'mon, one of you computer savvy homebrewers lives near enough to go help this guy out, right? We've been watching him bang his head on the wall for way too long now. I'm sure he'd pay in homebrew, and judging from his interview, you'd probably hear some cool stories and gain valuable insights on living life to the fullest!

I'd remote in for free and have a look around.

I'm curious about Zorin. Last time I tried Linux desktop I was pretty excited based on what I saw, then ended up being frustrated because the hardware install and software install was kind of a PITA still. I'd still have to have Windows running, but I could see switching to Zorin for my daily tasks. Maybe I will load it up on this old computer I have at work and check it out...

Unionrdr,

One problem with Windoze is the vast net of files that do things in the background. If you've had enough issues that you've run several virus/malware cleaning programs, my opinion is what's killing you is one of two or both of these.

1) One of the software cleaners you run is conflicting with another. It is NEVER a good idea to run two anti-virus programs at once. The rule holds true for some antimalware stuff as well, it just does not play well with others.

2) One of your file cleaners, cleaned files it shouldn't have. If they have a safe storage area for suspect files, check it to see if any look familiar. If not, windows has a repair in place option to recover essentail files without altering your exisisting file structure. You can access it by slowly tapping F8 while the machine is booting (after the POST test and before the windows splash screen).

This whole thread reminds me of why I disconnected my desktop and laptop from the Internet and only use them for programming and controlling Christmas lights and storing music and movies. I have a note 3 phone which hooks to a monitor, keyboard and mouse easily and I have everything I need with me anytime I need. Easy enough to bill customers, browse Internet, write beer recipes or watch movies. Really couldn't ask for anything more. Since I don't store any personal info on my phone I don't have to worry about viruses etc. and they are simple enough to encrypt the entire thing. Today's phones have really simplified life, so much so that since I had my accident I am even able to take some computer science classes with my phone. I may not have all the software available for a pc but it is getting really close. If I could just program the Christmas lights..... :D
