A couple of weeks ago I felt like fermenting something, and it occurred to me that I always wanted to try making ginger wine.

So I decided to try this: https://homebrewanswers.com/ginger-wine-recipe/

It includes root ginger, peeled bananas, and raisins. I used EC-1118 yeast. Starting SG after following the recipe was a whopping 1.140, but I decided to stick with the recipe. After 14 days in the primary, SG was down to 1.035 today so I siphoned it to a carboy. (I know 14 days is a bit longer than usual, but testing every day or two showed it was above 1.030 and still fermenting.)

It looks, smells and tastes fine, but I noticed an odd slight greasiness about the equipment when I was cleaning up, particularly the siphon tubing. I'm not that worried since this was a cheap project, but I'm curious to know if anyone has any idea what it might be. The only thing I can think of is something from the ginger, as it's the only ingredient I've never used before.

Hey dude, if you have any of the sultanas left, check the ingredients. Many of them contain vegetable oil, it stops them sticking together and makes them look more appealing and shiney.

It doesn't do anything to your wine, but I've also found some of my equipment to be a bit greasy.

Thanks for the info! Yes I thought of that eventually too, and the raisins did have sunflower oil. I guess some raisins have oil and some don't, and I should check the ingredients better. It's good to know my wine will probably be OK.
