I payed 20 bucks for a ball lock corny keg today that used to be used for soda. The o rings seem to be good, the friend I bought it from tells me it holds pressure, and it's in pretty good shape overall. The only problem is that it smells like Pepsi. What are some ways of getting that soda smell out of the keg, bearing in mind that I don't have any of the other kegging equipment yet? (i.e. co2, lines, tap, etc.)

I don't keg but I would suggest soaking it in Oxyclean.

I soak my plastic fermentation buckets in Oxyclean overnight when I'm done with a batch and it seems to get the smell out. Maybe it will work for your keg.

Fill it with hot water and 1/2 box of baking soda. Take the posts and o rings off and throw them in. Toss the lid and gasket inside as well and let it sit for a few days.

No more smell.

^^^ I might try that. I usually give them an Oxyclean soak but baking soda is cheaper! ;)

I've got it filled with oxyclean right now, I figure this'll also be a good chance to see if the seals are good in terms of holding liquid and replace the o rings if I need to before I actually am ready to use the thing.

Just spend the $5 and replace the seals now. That way you don't run into problems later.

I buy the dollar store brand oxyclean, "lindas ultra oxy soak poweder" lol. I have used them side by side, it works the same. $1 for 6 pounds.

Ditto what nukinfuts said. The first time I purchased OxyClean was the name brand kind for 12 bucks a bucket. Lasted 4-6 months. Now I just buy the dollar store stuff. 16oz. for 1 buck. Takes about 3-4 of them to fill my mini oxy bucket back up.

Does this work for getting the smell out of brand new kegs? Almost a petrol like smell from manufacture.
