Northern Brewer.com sells a plastic thief that works great. It's listed in their section on hydrometers. One thing though, it's not quite long enough to get a full sample from a 6.5 (need multiple dips to fill the test cylinder)- but it's a three piece sectional thing so I've just ordered a second one so I can double up the middle section to add more length.

The wine thief that I linked to has a simple check valve in the bottom. You only have to have the very end of it in the liquid. You then thrust it up and down. Each thrust down allow more liquid in, and when you thrust it up the check valve holds the new liquid level. Just keep doing that until the level is where you want it to float the hydrometer.
