Getting Massive Old stain out of carpet

Back in November, I brewed a Belgian Dark Strong that blew the top off of my bucket while I was out of town. By the time I got home a few days later the wort had already dried in a thick mess on the ground. I haven't touched it since then, but am moving out of my apartment in two weeks, and would like to get most of it off if I could.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get this out. I know some of you have experiences with exploding buckets and carboys so help me out please!

Steam cleaner may be the easiest and best way to go.

They say to get out red wine stains that you should use white wine.

Maybe try brewing up a pils letting that blow?

Oxyclean is usually my first go to since I always have it around.

You need a strong fan, a wet vac, and oxyclean. Saturate it with the a strong oxyclean solution and let it sit for a day. Scrub the crap out of it with a brush. Then spray with water and wet vac numerous times.

Then put the fan on it and brush every few hours to lift the pile. Wet carpet stinks bad. Dry it as quickly as possible to avoid a house smelling bad of mold.

I clean large area rugs this way (I pull them out onto the driveway). Like new when they are done.

[edit] I add TSP (trisodium phosphate) to oxyclean to make it a MUCH stronger cleaner. TSP is cheap. Get it in a box (it's a powder) at Home Depot in the paint dept. Use 3 parts TSP to 7 parts oxyclean. That's how I make my own PBW by the way. The TSP might be too strong for carpet, so you might just use the oxyclean first, but if the oxyclean doesn't do the trick, you might try it.

BTW, is this cut pile carpet (nylon) or "Berber" (olefin)?

If it's the loopy berber, it's solution-dyed and colorfast. You won't hurt it with cleaners.

If it's cut pile, which is usually nylon since nylon maintains its pile better than olefin, then the fibers of the carpet are dyed after the fibers are made, and thus it's more likely to stain, and to be bleached by strong cleaners like TSP.

thanks guys. I think I am going to oxyclean and scrub the s*** out of it every day for awhile. maybe rent one of those rug doctors from walmart. and I have a big box fan that should do the trick.

I use Folex carpet cleaner. You can get it at Lowes. It's non toxic, doesn't smell at all, and it gets grease, blood, wine, etc, pretty much anything our carpet. You can also put it in a carpet shampooer. Good luck man.

do you have a shop vac? scrub with HOT water and cleaner and suck up the water repeat. Also try borax.. whatever you use do a small test area to see it it changes color

Somebody has to ask- you've been living in an apartment with beer soaked carpet that you haven't cleaned in the past 6 months? That has to have been nasty.

I just carry my carpet out into the yard and use the pressure washer on it.

The dollar/$5 store has this carpet stain remover in a silver spray can. The stuff smells terrible but it works real well. Additionally a steam cleaner is a must for carpets. I usually use Oxyclean in the tank. Otherwise go for shampoos that are made for high traffic areas and pet stains. As for the chunkiness that was left behind, a few runs with a vacuum should break up the clumps prior to the steam cleaning.

Never let a stain sit. Its best to clean it sooner rather than later.

Frankly, I think you're screwed.

But Passed has some good advice. TSP and Oxi are a powerful combination.
