gettin going

Hi I have just started making cider but my first batch in a 5 gallon wine fermenting drum went off.It did not get going even though I had plenty of yeast and sugar.I have cider in demijons which is working fine. Any ideas what I did wrong ?

What kind of yeast? Did you use a starter?
