Well, Ya'll know I put together a bulk buy of grain recently and it arrived yesterday. My Tahoe has a bunch in the back of it at home still.

What crazy is, SWMBO and I arrived in Heidelberg, Germany this morning and we went of a walk this afternoon and on the way back came across a building with this sign in front of it.

Too cool! What are the odds? It must be destiny!

I am sooooo jealous, Ed! I was in Germany back in Jan. 2000 to visit my brother and his wife(she is German) while he was in the army. Spent two weeks and did not want to come home. Visited Rothenburg, Heidelburg, Fussen, Ulm, Wurtzburg and Schweinfurt. Absolutely loved the country, food:) , beer:drunk: and people. Hope to get back over there when they(brother/wife) goes back to visit his in-laws.

Hey Ed, can you walk in that building and buy grain? I live 1hr 20mins out of Heidelberg and I've been having the hardest time finding a place I can go buy grain.

It takes up to 4 weeks for me to get ingredients ordered from the states and I can't mail order from a German company because all I have is an APO address, so only USPS mail comes to me.

FYI, Kaiser, if you read this (sorry to hijack thread Ed) I drove all OVER germany hopping address to address of the places those Germans recommended and had no luck... I had a GPS mapping, directions system in my car too. Most of the places the Germans recommended looked like people's houses, not businesses and I wasn't gonna just go up and knock on the door, ya know? I guess I need to hit up a brewery and see if they will help me out. I was on the road for 8 hours driving around the other day.

seefresh,

Many German homebrewers do indeed buy their base malt directly from the maltster. But since you have to buy in 25 or 50kg quantities, this doesn't work for specialty malts. Why not make a trip to Weyermmann in Bamberg. Though it will be quite far from where you are, visiting Bamberg and the Maltster will be worth it. They are very active in supporting home brewing and are one of the few who bag in 25kg (55lb) bags as opposed to 50kg bags.

Were you finally able to get a log-in to hobbybrauer.de?

Ja, but not this time. SWMBO is with me and she has an agenda. Next time though. Perhaps in May.

Wie oft reisen sie nach Deutschland??

Yea I sent them an email, they said that they only seel large amounts, like Kai said. I'm about to do my first AG with supplies ordered from the states. Once I do it, and feel comfortable with it, I'll probably go buy a 55lb sack of some sort of base malt (pils? 2-row? Those are base malts, right?).

I'm definitely gonna head over to Weyermann. I got my wife trying to clear some dates on the calendar. I was in Heidelberg as well a couple days ago, man, that city is so cool.

55lb is actually not a large amout for a maltster. Some may only sell malt by the ton (~2000 lb). For others the smallest amout they sell are 110lb (50kg) bags. Yes, pils and 2-row are pase malts. The most common malt in Germany will be Pilsner malt, but Weyerman also has Pale malt which sounds like a good substitute for american 2-row.

Regarding Hops and Specialty malts, just ask at Weyermann if they supply any home brew stores in your area. I don't think that they will be able to sell you specualty malts in quantities less than 55lb.

Here is some information on Bamberg's beer: http://www.bamberg.info/www_tks/Bamberg_Kultur_bierstadt_35_16_0_f.htm
The site also seems to have an english version.
