I am trying to clear a 1 gallon test batch of dry cider that has been cold crashing in a secondary jug for 9 days now. It did drop some yeast but the cider is very far from clear.

Read using gelatin works for clearing up cider and beer. Does anyone have a step by step approach to adding gelatin for cider. Found some for beer but not real good guidance for cider and gelatin. Am I being too impatient with my cold crashing that I shouldn’t add gelatin?

Did you start from a cloudy or hazy must? If you did, you could also try pectinase. This will break up pectin and allow it to fall out of suspension. It will still work after fermentation, but it tends to work best prior to fermentation (for next batch of cider).

If you started from a clear must, then patience is your friend. I have found that most of my ciders will drop crystal clear after about a month in the secondary/tertiary vessel.

Unless you boiled the cider it will clear. Just give it some time. Dropping clear depends on time and temperature. The lower the temperature, the less time it takes. Gelatin is an alternative, but patience generally yields the best results.

Started with farm cider so it was that dark brown not clear color. Added pectic enzyme before fermentation.

Is that a month in the fridge cold crashing or at room temperature. I have read people having success at 24-48 hours cold crashing? I know this depends on the juice, the yeast, and the other factors, but is it really something that has that much variance in it from a couples days to a month while cold crashing?

Indeed. What do you find to be a typical cold crash time for a cider in the fridge at mid 30s? Sure it all changes based on the cider but what is a general time frame?

I generally do a 14 day primary and after transferring to secondary get clear cider in another 2 to3 weeks. I use gelatin for some of my beers, but never found the need with cider.

Great thanks for the info!
