I began my GE Mini Fridge (the model with shelving held on by the screws) to Fermentation Chamber build this weekend. Put on a nice coat of chalkboard paint for looks and got all the guts removed, but I am having some issues putting the door seal back on.

I attempted to use 1/8" plexiglass and reattach the seal, but that ended up not working at all. Any other ideas to use besides cutting the outer edges of the shelving in order to get the door seal back in place and snug?

I wish I could offer some advice for you, but I did with mine exactly what you're trying to avoid. I just trimmed the door shelving so it was basically just a frame with the original screws. I left a lip on it which held in place a piece of plastic corrugate perfectly.

Did you get rid of the original shelving already?

Yeah I kept the shelving in case I ever wanted to turn it back into mini-fridge for other uses, but I have arrived at the realization I am just going to trim the edges. Not worth the frustration again ha.

I actually used caulk and contractors adhesive and glued the strip back onto the door for mine.

I found some door weather strips at HD that worked great for me. I believe the brand name was frost king but I will post some pics when I get home later. They were thin metal strips with a lot of holes to put screws it. They came with a rubber gasket that fit in a channel. Took out the gasket and the refrigerator door gasket fit in nicely.

<<Edit>>
Ok so the brand was indeed Frost King. You can see in the images the channel and how my door gasket fit right into the channel and screwed into the collar I had to make for my door. I hope it helps.

Did you build a mini collar for a mini fridge?

I cant tell if you are poking fun at me or not but yes I did. My $30 craigslist fridge was too small for my buckets so I added a "mini" collar on the door and everything fits nicely together.

Not making fun, I actually thought about it to try and fit 2 carboys at once, but was worried about the weight of it "hanging" on the edge of the fridge or door.
