I'm having trouble googling this. Are all hibiscus edible? Grandpa has some growing in his yard and I'd like to use some in a brew, but I don't want to poison anyone.

Absolutely. Hibiscus petals lend a wonderful citric and slightly fruity flavor to beers, working well in saisons especially. The finished beer will pick up a bit of red color from the petals, you just need to experiment with dosage since I’m more accustomed to using dried hibiscus petals.

Hi Nelson! Nelson Hopped Saison w/Hibiscus

Cool. I have some dry I bought from Yakima Valley hops, but when I saw these, I thought if pick some, and see if I could use them. Can't wait.

No, it is Roselle you want. They flower, and then you harvest the calyx, remove seed. You can dry or boil for a tart drink.
We plant 5 bushes a year over here, make jam and tea out of it.

I just pitched some into a 2row/wheat low hop for an experiment.
Last 5min of boil in a muslin bag, stayed for the steep/cool down. Removed at Carboy time.
Little Krausen, I mean little, like a 1/4-1/2 inch opposed to my standard 3", airlock activity but I think the oil from the Roselle maybe hindering the yeast and it's anarobic life. In other words I do not see good Krausen as when it is not in there. Will measure FG in a week and see what and how it did off the 1.053 Start.
