Thoughts on an APA recipe featuring Galaxy and Amarillo? Thinking of using the hops 50/50 with a first wort hop, a 10 minute hop, and a 10 minute hop stand, for a total of about 45 IBUs. Has anyone used these two popular hops as a combination, or does anyone have any thoughts about how this recipe may work out/could be improved? Thanks much!

Closest recipe I have uses this hop schedule (10 gallons to the kegs):
  • Columbus 1oz @60
  • Amarillo/Chinook/Galaxy/Nugget 1oz ea @5
  • Amarillo/Chinook/Galaxy 2oz ea WP 20min @170°F
  • Amarillo/Chinook/Galaxy 4oz ea DH for 2 days @50°F after soft crash
68 IBUs (Tinseth from Beersmith3)

I've actually brewed this recipe 7 times and currently have it on tap, so I'd say it has its merits :)

Cheers!

I love Galaxy and Amarillo together! I make an Amber ale with the two plus a little Centennial every now and then. One version going back 6-7 years now, won a local brewery comp and I got to make it there a few times, have it upscaled at another brewery for distribution in cans and also got a trip to GABF out of it. For that I used Amarillo FWH for 90 minutes (24.5 IBU), Amarillo at 5 (4.1), Galaxy at 5 (4.0), Galaxy 10 minute whirlpool (6.2) and Centennial and Galaxy in dry hop. So only 38 IBU beer, but a ton of fruity, juicy hop aromas.
