When doing a full boil using extract do you add all the extract at beginning or late in boil? My last batch was an extract kit with specialty grains. I did a 4 gallon boil with 3lbs LME at begging then 4lbs at 40 mins. Batch went in secondary today and it looks and tastes great. Im shopping for a burner and new kettle so i can do full boils.

There isn't really a right way or a wrong way these days. Some add all at the beginning, but color tends to be darker that way. Some add half at the beginning and then half towards the end, like in the last 15 minutes, and it tends to keep the beer lighter. I actually added all my extract in a cream ale at 45 minutes once, and read that most do half and half and got all worried that flavor might suffer some, but it ended up turning out great! The color and flavor were great, and I wouldn't hesitate to make it the same exact way all over again. I dunno if a judge in a competition would feel the same way, but I brew for myself and friends anyway, so that doesn't quite matter to me. I might send one in to a comp for feedback next time I make it that way, but honestly, even if the judge gave it a negative score, I enjoyed it, so it wouldn't bother me a bit.

On NHB day last Saturday,my wife did her 1st with steeping grains. worked the grains 1st,hot break, add wheat & pilsner DME's. Hop additions, then added the Breisse pilsner light LME. Looks like the color will be lighter rather than darker. She got an OG of 1.050!

Sounds tasty!!

This is a good article about extract brewing. The extract actually only needs about 15 min. to boil for sanitary reasons. After I steep my specialty grains I bring the wort to a boil w/ a touch of extract and then add my hops per whatever schedule then w/ the last 18 minutes I add my bulk of extract and my irish moss. been turning out great.
