so I scored a 20 dollar fridge on craigslist, easily big enough for 3 buckets :)

Question is, and I know each fridge is different, but is it necessary to add a temp controller, or can a fridge maintain mid 60's on it's own? I'll add a controller later probably anyway, but is it useable for the time being do you think? I'd plug it in and see, but it's settling down now and airing out.

I don't know if your fridge will be able to maintain as high temperature as mid 60s on its own. I reckon you'd have to turn it on and off, manually.

For "set and forget" you'd want a temp controller. Especially if you want stable temps during the most active part of fermentation, when the temp will get warmer inside the carboy, than the ambient temperature. You'd then want to have the probe of your temp-controller either inside the carboy, or attached to its side and insulated.

Get a stc-1000 and what else is needed. If you have the cash for it right away (approx $30-35) get the pieces.

Didn't mean to be a party-pooper here. Set it at the absolute lowest effect and see where it gets you at. But for controlling the most active parts of fermentation, you def need a controller.

I really should get one anyway, then I have no excuse to make lagers :)

Edit: Ordered one, should be here thursday.
