So I brewed today for the first time in a year. I'm clearly out of practice because as I was cleaning up after brewing up a honey wheat extract kit I realized I forgot to add the finishing hops to the end of the boil... How did I come to this conclusion? The little packet was still laying on the table where I had left it.

The question is what should I do? Do I boil up a bit of water, add the hops, boil for 5 minutes and add to fermenter? Am I SOL? I'm open to ideas.

I vote for boil in plain water. Not all hops are good for dry hopping.

Or split them into boil and dry hop if variety is good for it.

What were the hops, and how late were they supposed to be added? SanPancho brings up an ok point, but I would say it's more rare that they won't work as a dry hop if they were supposed to be a late hop.

It's likely you should just dry hop them.

Unfortunately they are not labeled by variety the little packet just days finishing hops and they were supposed to be added with 5 minutes left in the boil.

Sanitize the packet and around the contact points of your lid or stopper and add them now. No harm. Less flavor maybe, more aroma. Don't trip, there are a lot more batches in the future, and this might come out better than expected for having changed the hop schedule up a little.

I agree with the dry hop. But I disagree with the timing. I would wait until it's finished fermenting (which will be around 8-9 days from now), then add them for 5-7 days. But then I do agree with that there will be lots of batches to come. This is a very small mistake. And will only slightly change the final outcome. It will be almost imperceptibly lower bitterness, which doesn't matter for this style anyways.

Hmm. Well I was planning on doing a secondary and adding another pound of honey so maybe I'll Just dry hop at that time.

This is good advice. Maybe disregard all other replies, including my own, and go forward based on this one.
And update please...

I forgot to add some DME last brew. I used 1 and a half of the Coopers packets in a hop boil. I forgot to put the dry stuff in the FV. I didn't find it until cleaning up and the brew in the fridge......

We all do something sometimes that we feel a little silly about after. I did just dump it in on top of the wort though. It's all gone now so I presume it's all good.

I also filled to 22 litres thinking I overfilled. I had been reading up an extra strong Ale recipe or two for my next brew which called for 21 litres. Anyway I'm a quart short on my 5 gallons which makes my beer 5.9% ABV.

I didn't spot that error until after I put my brew water in the kettle to make SWMBO a cup of herbal tea. I hate the taste of our tap water and refuse to brew with it....

I'll have to put up with less bottles of a stronger lager.

My excuse is it was a late brew on a work night and was tired and trying to work quickly.
