I have a porter that is done through primary and I am going to add bourbon and oak to it. I was thinking of transfering to a corny adding the bourbon and oak then purging with CO2 for secondary. I figure I can force transfer into another corney off the oak when its ready to cut down on O2 exposure. I picked up one of those keg jumpers to do this a while back. My question is how do you know when the transfer is complete without opening it up to see it is empty or picking it up and shaking?

The transfer hose is clear, so you will see when you are out of beer, just like when a keg blows. Also, you will hear it because you will be pushing CO2 to the bottom of the new corny and it will bubble through your beer. Make sure you connect beer out to beer out (Black to Black on a ball lock) so you are filling the new corny up from the bottom.

Thanks, sounds easy enough. Am I correct in assuming I need to keep the relief valve open on the recieving keg during transfer?

Since your beer isn't carbed yet, yes leave the relief open. If you are transferring carbonated beer then you only want to bleed it occasionally to keep the beer under pressure.
