I'm new to the fly sparge and was wondering if this is a common method for regulating water height and flow in a gravity system. It is the use of an external standpipe to control water level in the MLT. I drew an awesome picture below to illustrate the method. Basically you set the external stand pipe to the level just above the grain bed and turn the pump to a very low flow and let gravity do the work. Once all of the sparge water is pumped over into the MLT, you rely on the ball valve to regulate the remainder of the water into the boil kettle.
