I was just wondering if you open a beer and let it go flat can you put it in a hydro get get a ballpark fg reading that way?And yes I know I would still have to drink it or be smitten by the beer gods. Cheers.
 
true. degas and take an accurate FG reading. work backwards from there using ABV% and you can get OG.

very helpful if you're trying to clone a commercial beer

or if, oops, you forgot to take your FG before bottling
