Purchased some kegs and a reg setup for two about 2 months ago. I have since filled the first one (brown ale) and force kegged by rolling on the ground. It worked fine and I enjoyed the beer for about two weeks. I then filled a second keg (Hefe) and simply put it in the fridge and turned the psi up to about 12-13, let it sit for about a week. Needless to say the first keg is now over carbed. Whats the best way to bring the carb level down.

Now the bigger issue is with the Hefe. After a week I pulled a couple glasses and it was not carbed and seemed to have trouble dispensing. It has now been three weeks and it will not dispense from the picnic tap. I got a feeling that the dip stick is clogged because the first couple glasses had some stuff floating around which seemed to be some hop trub. Is this common and how to I clean it?

For the overcarbed beer. Turn off the gas to that line and vent some pressure. Once the carbonation levels out, you can turn the gas back on or just give it a shot once in a while to maintain enough pressure for dispensing. For the other issue, if the dip tube clogged, you'll need to pull it and clean it. This may not solve your problem though if there is more debris in the keg that could clog it up again. If this is the case, you really need to rack it to eliminate this. In the future, make sure you filter this stuff out.

expand on vent some pressure. Do I hold the vent open until the airflow slows?

whats the best way to filter? I used an autosiphon to go from bucket to keg.

Hi

Drop the pressure in the keg to below your target pressure (vent until the needle starts to drop). The beer will push out CO2 and the pressure will rise above your target if you don't. You can vent further than that, it won't hurt anything. The CO2 you are worried about is the stuff in the beer not it the gas pocket above it.

Turn the gas to the keg off, and vent all of the pressure in the keg. Keep the pressure off, and continue to vent several times a day until the carbonation level drops to where you want it, likely a few days. Then reconnect the gas at serving pressure, and you're good to go.

Just be careful not to stir up too much debris when you rack to the keg. You can also sanitize a piece of pantyhose to put over the end of your autosiphon or racking cane to help filter out the larger particles.

thanks for all the help. I figured out my main problem this morning. I vented off the over carbed keg and opened it. It was frozen. That explains why the other one has not been dispensing.

Hi

A stick on LCD thermometer strip might be a good investment....

Hi
Bob
You obviously know very little about these devices. There is no LCD in the stick on LC thermometer strips.

See, it goes both ways. I know what you meant, and you know what I meant.
