I was coming up with a basic IPA recipe to use up the last of my Simcoe and Amarillo when I suddenly thought "I like rye beers, why have I never brewed one?". I found a recipe for Sierra Nevada's Ruthless Rye and took a bit of inspiration from that, how does this look...

Batch Size: 12.00 L
Boil Time: 60 min
Efficiency: 65.00 %
Est Original Gravity: 1.070 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.014 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 7.4 %
Bitterness: 76.9 IBUs
Est Color: 11.4 SRM

Ingredients
3.50 kg Pale Malt (2 Row) US
0.65 kg Rye Malt (4.7 SRM)
0.25 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt 80L

60min 6.00g Columbus (Tomahawk) [14.00 %]
15min 8.00g Amarillo [8.20 %], 8.00g Columbus [14.00 %], 8.00g Simcoe [13.50 %]
10min 15.00g Amarillo,15.00g Columbus, 15.00g Simcoe, 0.50 tsp Irish Moss
0min 20.00g Amarillo, 20.00g Columbus, 20.00g Simcoe
(hop stand for 10-15min before cooling)

dry hop for 7 days 25.00g Amarillo, 20.00g Columbus, 20.00g Simcoe

Looks pretty yummy to me. I think you could up the rye percentage if you wanted, I know the Ruthless clone actually doesn't have that much but I seem to need about 20-25% to make the rye noticeable. I've never done a rye beer with quite as high an OG as you have there, though.

Thanks, I didn't want to over-do it with the rye, and have had others suggest 20% max. Only one way to find out really, I'll give it a crack next time, and unless something goes terribly wrong I'm guessing I'll be only too happy to brew it again with more (or less) rye.
