first time blunder

ok so I decided to use a regular plastic jug I bought at the store cause it had a spout on it and thought it would make it easier to bottle. well I made rootbeer from an extract and only 2 days in to letting it ferment my new jug blew up

How thick was the jug? Did you use an airlock or seal it tight?
