Hello,

I will be attempting my first ten gallon batch this weekend, some sort of red ale. I have read with larger grain bills for bigger beers efficiency goes down when talking about 5 gallon batches, but does this hold true for 10 gallon batches? What I'm asking is, should I reduce my estimates efficiency for this 10 gallon batch of standard gravity ale?

Thanks!

No need to adjust efficiency. The reason your efficiency goes down with large 5 gal batches is because more of your water is used to mash giving you less sparge water.

Sweet thanks. I'll be teaching some friends how to all grain brew, don't want to make a fool of myself in the process.

Since I went to ten gallon batches my efficiency has gone up. My last was at 86%. What kind of mashtun are you using?

10 gallon Rubbermaid.

My efficiency also increased when I switched to a rectangle cooler with a copper manifold. It costs a little more but I extract more sugars with this set up. Worth the extra $!
