Mostly a set back with the wife. Had a 1L ez swing bottle blow out from the bottom in a coat closet . Not 100% on the cause. FG came in high at 1.018, had it in the primary for 5 weeks at 68 degrees, pitched a wyeast pack for a 3 gal batch, calculated for 3.5 vols. The beer did have some decent bubbling going on in the primary which I took as "natural" carbonation since it started 4 weeks in the primary. The bottles were also bought off Craigslist so who knows how old that are.

Well, calculated for 3.5 volumes is probably the issue. That's a lot of pressure and many bottles could explode with that volume. If it got hot in the closest, that could have created even more pressure in the bottle and could have caused the bottle bomb.

Yep, live and learn. It's a hefe so I went with NB calculator. I'm not sure where I read it but I saw that some ppl go up to 4.0 on them. The rest of the bottles got moved to the basement in a plastic bin.

I have been fearing the exact same thing. Got a brew that finished a little bit high, and the closet is the only place in the house that is a stable temperature for carbonation.

I was going to put the bottles in a plastic bin with a lid just in case and carbonate lightly, maybe 2 volumes.

Also it seems that not all bottles are created equal, some definitely have thicker glass, so I'll use with those. If I was real concerned I'd use PET bottles.

Edit - I read the same thing about hefes as well - I love a nice bubbly brew but was too scared to put my last one past 3 vols. FWIW, the carbonation of the hefe at 3 vols was great.
