So I am about to attempt my first partial mash this weekend and am just curious if you have any extra advice for me. I've got a 6g bucket with a strainer at the bottom filled up about 1/2 to 2/3 the way with crushed grains and adjuncts that my friends dad gave to me. He said to put about 3gal of water around 180F into the bucket and let it sit for an hour. He said that amount will probably cool to around 154F after I mix it in to the grains. After the hour is up (sitting around 152-154F) I am supposed to drain the grains and then run the wort through it again to get all the sugars i can out. Then I am supposed to go ahead and boil the batch as normal and add hops and all. He also said that about a pound of DME would be all i should add to the boil. Does this sound good to you guys? any suggestions?

That doesn't sound like a partial mash...that sounds like an all grain batch with a little DME added.

Sounds fairly seat of the pants to me (not that it wouldn't make beer). 3-4 gallons of grain is a lot. You won't be needing any DME I don't think. The strike temp also sounds high, but that's highly dependent on the system and it very well may be correct.

Don't think you'll need any DME. Try to get your mash temps around 150 - 152 and hold for about a hour. Weigh your grains mix and use about 1.2 qt of water per Lb of grain. If you haven't before, you'll now need to do a full boil and chill the wort down with some sort of a chiller if you want the best resylts from your beer. Do a bit of reading on all grain here http://www.howtobrew.com/section3/index.html and look at this also http://cruisenews.net/brewing/infusion/ this one has pictures. Good luck this weekend. Once to try all grain you'll never go back to extract.
