There's a million methods for everything so don't stress out because someone else does things this way or that way.
What kind of equipment are you using? Cooler? False bottom, manifold, or braid?
If you doing a mini-mash in a cooler then use Aluminum foil to reduce the head space in the cooler. This along with pre-heating the cooler will do wonders for maintaining your mash temps.
