Thread title says it all. My first mead every, which is only 3 weeks old, smells exactly like the childhood favorite, bubble tape gum. Is this normal?

I think I have done a couple things wrong with this mead that make it inferior. First, I added the honey right after I boiled the water (tap). I also live in an apartment with no meaningful temperature control (other than cooling the entire apartment), so the mead has fermented so far at about 70F.

Broham! I just started my first two recipes 11 days ago! Although I don't have advice, I'm here to say I'm right there with you! Except grape! I tried a wild ferment that didn't go well and at 8 days pitched k1v1116 and now have a very nice ferment going I wish you best of brew!
From what I've been told smells will come if they aren't bad you're good, they tend to age in or out of the mead! But I don't know that from experience yet! :)

Don't worry about smell. Well-fermented mead can still smell and taste like fuel. Also, I think most of us don't boil the honey, so don't worry about either.
