I'm attempting to grow hops for the first time and because I'm a beginner grower I figured that allowse to use this thread. I surprisingly got little help from people on the growing forum so I'll try this one. Anyways I got three types in large planters two crowns and one small three inch plant. I planted them in merciless grow potting soil with a little sand to add as a filler but I have a few questions. Was it to early to plant hops and since I live in Atlanta where we have mild fall and winters will these plants really grow much before spring or will they be pretty much dormant? Also I planted them in pots because the house I just bought and moved into doesn't have the right growing space yet. I'm going to cut down many tall pines to allow for more sunlight. Can I transplant hop plants? How much sunlight a d water do these plants need when they are this young or small? I can post Pics of that will help. One is a Columbus crown a helleratu crown and a cascade plant. Any help would be great

Hop plants will require a dormancy period trying to keep them growing until spring will stress the plants. With that said try to find a shady spot where the pots will maintain a constant temp. A sunny location in the pot will cause to much temp difference for the soil between day and night for dormancy periods. The other thing to do is find a spot in your yard and plant pots and all to keep a more stable soil temp. Also make sure the do not dry out you want them to freeze wet but not be overly wet before the ground freezes.

You can transplant them from the planters to your yard without any problems just make sure to keep the rootball together.

The will require full sun during the growing season after they are about 6" tall. As far as water is concerned you want the soil to dry out but not completely during growing seasons they do not like there soil to be continuously damp when they are young.

Hope this helps.

So my plants are dormant right now? That's interesting. Should I keep them in my laundry room or garage?

If your plants have not been in temps below 32 i doubt they are dormant already. But they will need a dormancy period your garage should work fine for the winter months as long as you can keep the temp below 50 and somewhat constant. In other words you don't want the plants to have a temp swing from say 40 degrees to 70 degrees daily during there dormancy period.
