Hello everyone,

I took off with my first batch last night, went pretty good! Only one boil over haha. It wasn't until I had the water boiling that I realized I accidently picked up 4lbs of Pale Malt Extract, and 4lbs of Amber Malt Extract. I was going for an IPA, and this is the rough recipe I used:

8lbs Pale Malt Extract
1/2lb Crystal Malt 120L (which I skipped, due to the amber extract)
2oz centenial @60
2oz cascade @15
1oz cascade @5

Now I was already setup and excited to go, so I didn't want to stop the boil and wait until tuesday (when my LHBS reopens) to exchange the amber for pale extract. I understand my beer isn't going to turn out how I wanted it, but will it be so bad that is undrinkable? I really hope not, since it is my first brew and plan to do many many more.

Thanks!

You beer will be fine. Good call on skipping the crystal. At worst, you will end up with an Imperial Amber!

With or without the crystal your beer would have been good. With the crystal your IPA would have just been darker in color with more malt flavor than the intended recipe.

India (Color Here) Ale is what you make it. I brewed what amounts to an India Blonde Ale last night, but for some reason light IPAS still get called pale.

Awesome thanks for the quick replies guys! I kind of figured with the darker LME I would just end up with a darker, maltier IPA, so hopefully that's what I get! It was my first batch ever so who knows if I screwed up or not haha.

Briess (and Milliard) LME is a proprietary blend. I think it is 75% Base malt, 15% Munich, and 10% Crystal 60.

I don't know what the Pale LME is, I suspect it is 99% Base Malt and 1% Carapils.
