Good thing I had an extra tank of propane. Being overly prepared is paying off already.

We're excited for you too. by the power invested in us we declare you a brewer! Now read all the brewing threads you can and become a good brewer! Welcome to our land of happy brewing! Ask us anything you wish.

Thank you. I've been doing quite a bit of reading and videos. My wife said she wanted me to have an at home hobby. She doesn't realize what she has done...

Wives are the best brewers of them all. They genetically have an extreme repository of knowledge of brewing that they've long since repressed. In ancient times, the women were the brewers (or the slaves were). But today the usual inspiration to brew is the odd Christmas gift by the wife of a beer kit or the request "Hey Honey, get me a beer" that gets it all started. Now if she will only make cookies for the brew sessions and her true knowledge of brewing facilitation will appear. Just give her a chance.

Welcome new brewer. I think I'll have a beer to celebrate your new found hobby.
Cheers

I like your set up but boiling inside the garage gives me the willies. Don't burn the house down. That could really ruin a weekend. Move it to the driveway at least. It's ok to not start fires inside dwellings.

Ha funny. It was a Christmas gift. She thought it came with everything needed... She's been happy to see me spending money on everything else. And she been bringing me beers. Next time she will bring me home brews hopefully. I'm a lucky man.

I have an extinguisher on hand and being very careful. It's 20 degrees outside here. I doubt this burner could even keep up. I have it cranked up all the way and my wort is boiling at a steady 212 degrees. But I appreciate your concern!

I've been brewing in a garage all fall/winter. It's fine - just be sure you have your garage door wide open and assuming you have a rear door, open that too to get cross ventilation. I really enjoyed brewing in the fall - fall color + listening to football on the radio while adding ingredients - it's a very peaceful couple of hours.

Has anyone else had a problem with their burner leaving soot all over the bottom of the kettle? I feel like that's a problem with the burner.

Scrub with some water and Oxy Clean it will get most of it off. My kettle will never look like new on the bottom, but I got over it. I don't care about the bottom of my kettle - I care about what I think of what I drank to get to the bottom of my glass :)

I'm not worried about a little discoloration, but when that soot gets on it then it gets all over everything else. It cleaned up fine, just a pain. I'll get a new burner. That was actually my neighbors.
