My advice with beer is to always use a blow off tube no matter what. Almost all of my brews have some blow off. It's a very good thing. When there is none, that's when you should worry.

I thought this thread was going to be about an actual blow off, as in your bung exploding off and beer going everywhere.

This happened to me on my first partial mash. I even had a blowoff tube. It was a bit short though so it came out of the water and then something must have dried in the tube and then I wake up to a gun shot type sound and I run into the next room to find my the side of my wall, floor and ceiling covered. I ended up actually having to paint the ceiling. It was an Indian Brown Ale.

I may just start doing that from now on, just using a bung first with something for the pressure to blow off into. Midwest got back with me and said that particular yeast strain I was using was known for being very aggressive and having a high krausen.

And for the person who said 'until the carpet gets crusty', we have a dyson that has a built in steamer to it. Not tha worried haha. But I did panic a bit at first thinking just clearing the airlock would work and then 10 minutes later I hear "shhhhpeeewwwwwwsppshhhhhhhh". That told me, okay...plan B. I thought for some reason the hose would fit into the airlock hole but then I remembered the hose fits in the hole of the bung.

Absolutely, completely, 100% agree with this.

Absolutely, completely, 100% disagree with this. There's no reason you should worry if you don't have blow off, plenty of yeasts take their time and are pretty chill, so they won't cause any blow off unless you're not providing enough head space or you're over pitching.

I usually suggest if it's a recipe or yeast that you don't have experience with, use a blow off tube. If it's something you're comfortable with, and you know how the yeast is going to act, then use your judgement.

I use a Wine Bottle or a 22 Oz. Bottle for putting my Blow-off tube into with a bit of star-san. Works better then a cup or jug i find, if the Fermentation is aggressive and you have lots of blow-off you want something that the hose wont slip out of easily.
I like how you used the double spout bunge with a thermo-well for you temp controller. Is that a common thing or did you just think it up? I am still pretty new to brewing (about a year) and that is the first time i have seen that.

Why is fermenting on carpet not good?

I suggest an experiment. Have a fermenter spooge all over the carpet and then try to clean it. Or just search for "how to get yeast gunk out of my carpet" and live vicariously through others. I recommend the latter. Ugh.

I'm in the always use a blow off - finagles law always applies.

As for container, I've always found a growler half full with star san does a damn good job, even if the fermenter is a gusher. I've had good luck putting the hose on the inside of a 3 piece airlock or one of the carboy tube hoods, but you *could* get blockage.

Oh, always have the blow-off container *below* the wort line of your fermenter. Suck back is a bitch. Suck back that triggers a siphon and slurps up 20 oz of liquid is a significantly larger bitch.View attachment ImageUploadedByHome Brew1422508006.132770.jpg

Although this sounds like common sense and has been answered twice already, better than I could have, fermentors can also leak, crack, or burst (glass or plastic). Carpet is just not easy to clean when an unfortunate event happens, and the smell lingers forever. Your dog can tell you stories. Your SWMBO will evict you.

Put your fermentors in a tote or large cooler with water, perhaps in a spare bathroom or where the floor is more forgiving. The water jacket can be used to regulate the fermenting temps.

Yeah, as I write this we have a carpet cleaner at our house cleaning the carpet, $120. I learned the hard way to use a blow-off tube, I was just wondering if it was bad being on the carpet now that it's settled down. Definitely going to put the carboy in something that surrounds it for next time along with using a blow-off tube.
