I'll be making an extract IPA for my first go...

For adding hops in the boil, there are a few to add (at 60 mins, halfway, and down to the end, etc)...

As I add new hops in am I keeping the little bags of the previous hop addition so they are all mixing as I add them later or is it supposed to be one at a time?

I'm thinking I'm supposed to leave them in - for example to give the main bittering hops the complete hour - and would have maybe four bags of hops to take out before transferring to fermenting pail?

I know, pretty basic question but I wanted to make sure

You're right, you must leave them all at once. You can either use multiple bags if you want or just drop them right in without bags, whether you prefer.

Leave them all in. Don't take them out until you're ready to transfer to the fermenter. Actually, I don't use bags at all. I just toss the pellets directly into the boil.

Thanks folks for the quick answers.. I kind of felt dumb asking that, but this seems like the perfect place for those questions...

Never feel dumb for asking a question here, or anywhere on the forum. We're all learning, some more than others, but that never stops. Techniques change over the years, as do ingredients and equipment and more. You'll always find some part of the brewing process you'll want to change, either for fun or efficiency, so ask away; chances are someone else out there has already done it and can give you the insight you're looking for.

If you choose to dump the hops into the wort instead of using bags, you can just dump all of that into the fermenter too, no need to try filtering it out.
