I would like to thank all of you for your support and valuable information that led to a successful first brew day. Highlights of the day include: a mash temp of exactly 154.4 which only dropped about a degree over the hour. Fly sparging that went smoothly, thoroughly aerated wort thanks to the Venturi wort aerator I built out of a brass pex fitting, and most of all a gravity that was 4 points higher and a finished volume about a gallon more giving an efficiency of 85+ percent (I don't have an exact volume but it's over 24L.

Oh and I'm calling it Pixie Dust IPA since there is a good amount of fluffy white snow that made it into the product.

Glad it went well! I have one extract kit with steeping grains left that I will be doing next weekend, and then after that my first all grain. I have everything I need now but admit I am a little nervous about it working out okay. Glad you have your first one under your belt and that it sounds like it worked out okay. I am in Kingston, Ontario, probably not all that far from you in the grand scheme of things. I see that you got some of that snow we had last night. Hopefully, this is the last of it for the year. Anyway, hope your first all grain turns out well.

Small world, I grew up in Prince Edward County and went to Queens in Kingston. My brother still lives there and he brews too. I'm usually in the area a few times a year, Quebec City is just where I'm posted at the moment.

Conrats, hard to wait for it to be ready, huh?!

Yeah, the smell of those grains mashing is downright intoxicating. And when the wind changes and blows a big cloud of steam into your face right after an oz of hops goes in, it's almost too much to handle...

Congrats. Don't look back. I am right behind you. My next brew will be all grain. I did an extract this weekend and will do the same beer all grain to compare the two.

Well done.

My first AG brew was a simple bitter that worked perfectly and tasted great. The success went to my head and the second was a complicated rye recipe that stuck in the mash and tasted awful but it was all good experience.
