Hola amigos, I did my first AG batch last night and well it was early morning by the time I finished. I need to work on streamlining my time. But, that's another story. Things went pretty smoothly but I'm a bit concerned about my OG reading. I used 9lb 2 row, 1lb Vienna, and 1lb crystal 10L. According to my calculator I was supposed to get an OG around 1.054 and I got 1.066. I don't think it's a bad thing but just wondering what could cause a discrepancy. First time I've used this gravity fly sparge set up. I only calculated in a 75% efficiency into the equation. I guess it could have been higher or maybe my scale isn't that accurate and I had more than 11lb of grain? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Love this site by the way. There's even and i phone app! Veddy nice!

need to know your volume of wort that you took the OG for....

I put your recipe into Beersmith with a volume of 5 gallons....and 75% efficiency and come up with a theoretical OG of 1.060

If you had a 5 gallon batch with OG of 1.066 that would suggest a total efficiency of 83%.

So determine your actual efficiency and use it in your next batch to calculate your ingredient weights....you didnt do anything wrong and nothing to worry about....1st all grain and you get your efficiency from that and use in the future. Always calculate your efficiency from each brew and develop an average efficiency to use in future.

Could be your gear. What kind of a set-up are you using? Steel? Plastic cooler? Your equipment will make you lose more or less water. Easy fix is to test Ph after mashing and test gravity or Brix before you boil. That'll give you an idea if you need to boil longer or add water to top off your boil.

Oh yeah. Duh. Batch size was supposed to be 5 gal. Ended up with about 5.5 after 1 hour boil. A little heavy on the spare.
