My experience tells me that filtration is mostly cosmetic when it comes to beer.

That being said I've recently read some things that say the taste can be positively affected as well. Is this true? If so, is it so different that's it worth pursuing some kind of filtration setup?

I brewed for 3 years with only sediment filter on my well water.

Now I use a carbon cartridge filter for my HLT water. Not certain of anything, but the more I read, the more I think it's a good idea to remove maximum particulate and taste. I wouldn't go back to non-filtered water personally.

I think OP is talking about a filter AFTER fermentation.

If you go with a really fine filter you'll remove all the yeast, some hop aroma/flavor, and the beer won't carb in the bottle.

Frankly the only reason I see for filtration is to take a short cut on aging to get it in the bottle. It doesn't help with bottle sediment, unless you filter, keg, force carb, then bottle from the keg.
