First time brewer here... I'm about to bottle my first batch (Irish Stout) and I want to make sure I don't get any sediment from the bottom of the fermentation bucket. I was wondering if utilizing a coffee filter to make sure no nasties get into my bottling bucket (and in turn the bottles) was a good idea?

How did you incorporate the coffee filter into process?

My concern would be any oxygenation that may have occurred when racking through the filter into the bottling bucket.

No, in general it would be a very bad idea. Siphoning from above the sediment works well, but any time a chance for oxidation is introduced, like in a filter or coffee filter without appropriate kegging equipment and an appropriate filter set up, it's generally not a good practice and will ruin the beer relatively quickly.

A filter, that does not float, can be used. A good racking technique will also minimize the amount of hops getting through the siphon. Tilting the fermentor, prior to siphoning, with a piece of 2 x 4 helps by reducing the surface area, increasing the depth of the beer, when nearing the bottom of the bucket.

Just take care when racking.

The simplest thing to do is leave the beer in the fermenter for a week or two more. The longer the beer is in the fermenter, the clearer it will get, and the more packed the cake will be.

Thanks for all the advice! I bottled last night and it turned out great! I think I was worried too much. I didn't get any floaters and the cake was packed. Looked to be 3/4 of an inch thick! Now all I do is wait for 2 weeks...
