Heya

Was just making my first extract kit from AHS, noticed some weird colored stuff around at the top, not too concerned about it, just wondering what it is

I don't really notice the filmy stuff you're talking about. Then again, it might be the quality of the picture. Either way, I'm sure you're fine. Brewing looks funky a lot of the time and unless it's mold you really don't have to worry. ;)

Congrats on your first kit!

:mug:

I see what you are talking about. Kind of looks like an oil slick. You can see it on the wort in the area that has the light on it. I have noticed this too, but usually I see it in the carboy. I think I decided that it was Star San, could this be the case for you? Could be something in the extract, who knows. But I agree, don't worry about it.

I actually see it now! I still wouldn't worry about it though unless the taste is off after you ferment. When I mash I often get a shinny rainbow colors / bubbles on top in my Mash Tun. Hasn't ever cause a problem with flavor...

Wort doesn't reflect light the way water does. Also, it is denser and flows differently. You're fine.
