I use a 6.5 gal carboy for my primary fermentation. Does it hurt if light gets too it?

Yes. Get a cardboard box that fits over the carboy. Cut the bottom out and a hole in the other end for the neck of the carboy and place it over the top. It will keep the light out that could skunk your beer.

If the light gets to the beer it can skunk the beer. Just throw and old tshirt over the carboy and it will be fine

draping a shirt over it also works. put both armholes over the neck of the carboy and you'll have a very light-protected carboy.

I took and put it in our spare bathroom in the tub and put foil on the windows. I was wondering what the best way was to check the FG in a week or so so I don't ruin it.

a little bit of light won't hurt so you can check the gravity without fear. it's beer not a vampire. :D
